On the death of a Sparrow

Stray bird
Sparrowing in
And joyfully interrupting
The mundane In me

Bits of crumbs
Left for you
Devoured by crows
Never got to you

Chirping rapidly
Little bird
Always precarious
But never at my mercy

Your beady eyes
Black rainbow
Staring
And then shying away

Always in rhythm
Little darer in wings
Never afraid
Never hesitant

Today
Under the large
Windows of light
Lay a small soft spot of shadow

You, my unknown flutterer
Dead
On the first day of winter
Ushering in the cold

On the cool
Drenched with the marble
Your eyes sans pain
Your rhythm lay bare

So much like me
Quiet
And yet
Creaming stories inside

My stray little friend
I didn’t know you
But I loved you
And I weep for you
